Protecting the Rights of the Child

Legislative Fremework
Respecting, protecting and promoting human rights is a task that derives from the Croatian Constitution and from the international treaties of which the Republic of Croatia is a party. Regarding protection of the rights of the child, the Republic of Croatia is one of the countries that ensure and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms. It is also a party of several international treaties that protect rights and position of the child, like the European Council and the UN.

By its Constitution and statuatory acts and executive regulations the Republic of Croatia ensures protection of civil, political, economic, cultural and social rights of the child and implements continuously a number of national plans and strategies, with the aim of actual protection and observance of the rights of the child.

Institutional Framework
Institutional framework of the rights of the child  protection in the Republic of Croatia consists of numerous institutions: state administration bodies (Ministry of the Family, Veterans' Affairs and Intergenerational Solidarity; Ministry of the Interior), judicial bodies (juvenile courts), legal entities with public powers (Social Welfare Centre) and numerous institutions that function as a part of educational, health and welfare system. It also includes activities of civil society associations and those of religious communities.

Office of the Ombudsman for Children as an independent and autonomous body liable to the Croatian Parliament is founded with the aim of protection, observing and promoting rights of the child.
